An Extra Layer

I hope everyone had a good weekend! Ours was full of bids from roofing guys (we made a decision on what we're doing, but as I'm still reeling from spending that kind of money we're going to focus on something little today) and about five projects that I attempted and FAILED. Boo.

We bought curtains for our bedroom about a month ago, and of course, in true Wagner fashion, never got around to hanging them up. They are just the white Room Essentials curtains from Target, but they were on clearance and we got four 84 inch panels for $25.

We have valences and blinds up (valences that we made, and the wood blinds came with the house) but as we have one pane of glass, and no storm blocking us and the Michigan winter, it is cold. as. balls. in our bedroom. Luckily, in a few weeks we are going to have some sexy new windows put in (again, we'll discuss with the roof), but for now we are going to save our skin by adding an extra layer in.

I think it's also added a layer of visual warmth to our master. I'm finding that this room is getting cushier and more lovely the more layers I put in. I was also missing the bright beautiful white that we had going on. Back in December we purchased a brown duvet cover to try and extend the life expectancy on our white comforter that was getting abused by our 3 terrors terriers.

Here's what the master looked like in November.

And here's what it looks like today.

And I promise I'll iron the damn things eventually. My iron was being stupid.

The 84 inch curtains just dust the floor, which I love. And, because they went under the valences we were able to get $1 plastic curtain rods instead of pretty ones. Not like anyone is going to see the rod anyway!

So comfy looking. I also realized while I was talking to the Bloggie Besties (K, S, T) that I have never shown more of the bedroom other than the bed area.

According to the internet, Nate and I don't even have a dresser! That just can not do. So here is our dresser, just to prove we have one.

I got this dresser right after Nate and I started dating off of Craigslist for $15. It is solid maple, and it only took sanding and a fresh coat of stain to get rid of the cat pee stench. From this view you can also see our second window and that nook we were talking about with the shelves.

Where the dresser is was actually a really lucky, meant to be, type situation. Our dresser fits between the nook and the window within a 1/4 of an inch.

Nate and I are hunting for a piece of art to hang over the dresser, but I'm being very picky.

If you're laying in the bed and looking out the door to the hallway, we have the mirror that came with the dresser hung up on the wall. Call me weird, I think it's way easier to put liquid eyeliner on when the mirror is within three inches of your face and not two feet away over a dresser. It is of course terrible to photograph back into the dark cave...

And as an update, we are loving our hung up sconces from IKEA. With our nightstands being so small it is so nice to not waste space on a lamp base.

How was everyone's weekend? Did you guys do anything awesome?

  1. I keep layering coziness into the bedroom too... the more cavelike the better!:). I love the curtains, the white makes a big difference.

  2. I remember that MI cold weather. Now that I live in TX where it gets well over 75 in the winter I long for that cold weather. I love the colors in your bedroom I think it adds a lot of warmth.

    1. Now now Crystal, that was just mean bringing up the weather like that. Thank you very much! It's an ever evolving room!

  3. shark! we have white curtains waiting to be hung up in our bedroom, too. That's an excellent point about the valance and cheap curtain rods. I hate spending money on curtain rods. I'm excited about your new windows. Our house has new windows (not put in by us) on just the front half of the house, and our heating bill is like 11 cents. Not really, but surprisingly cheap.

    1. That's what I am hoping for! Our three front windows on our house are HORRID. So we are starting with those three. Also, we'll be eating ramen for 6 years, but it will be a good time...

  4. I really like the addition of the white curtains. It makes it feel more romantic, as a master bedroom should be :) May the odds be ever in your favor ;)

  5. THe white curtains really change the look of that corner in your already lovely room. love it! AND Yay for new windows! We have an older home and new windows have always been on our list, but there has always been something else to suck up the $, of course! Heres to lower heat bills and a warmer home! Btw, I am really enjoying your blog and am glad I stumbled upon you...you keep it real and can relate. AND your babies are so damn cute!

  6. I'm kind of in love with your rug.

And the fact that you buy things and then don't do anything with them for months. Girl after my own heart.

    1. Thanks! We got it from Home goods! They keep them in the bathmat section, but we got the 8x10 for $50!

  7. I love the extra layer of curtains! Ironing them is so overrated. Our living room curtains have been up for almost two years and I've never ironed them. I keep believing the wrinkles will work themselves out eventually.

I'm totally with you on the mirror placement. I need my nose about 3 inches from the mirror for eyeliner or eyebrow grooming. Glad I'm not the only one. That little nook for your dresser is perfect!
